예부터 천기(天機)를 누설하면 살아남지 못한다는 말이 있습니다. 천기를 누설하여 제 명에 죽지 못하고 삼십 년이나 앞당겨 죽은 조선조 선비 정북창의 이야기입니다.

악착같이 매달려 애원하는 춘현에게 지친 노인이 화를 내며 ‘정북창이란 놈이 천기를 누설했으니 그놈의 수명에서 삼십 년을 떼어 자네에게 주겠네’ 했다. 춘현이 백배사례한 후 고개를 들고 보니 소도 노인도 온데 간데 없었다. 춘현이 괴이쩍어하며 북창에게 돌아오니 북창은 대뜸 ‘내 수명 삼십 년을 네게 주었지? 그는 태상노인이야. 사람들의 수명을 감찰하고 있지. 실은 나도 살고 싶지 않으니 자네가 내 수명을 떼어간 것이 섭섭지 않네.’ 하였다....“
천기(天機)란 ‘모든 조화를 꾸미는 하늘의 기밀’ 또는 ‘조화의 신비’ 등으로 풀이됩니다. 하늘이 예정해 놓은 일을 인간이 뒤바꾸려 한 정북창은 결국 천기누설로 앞당겨 죽은 것입니다.

필자가 격암유록을 통해 확인한 감람나무의 사람이 옥고(獄苦)를 치르고 있을 때의 일이었습니다. 격암유록을 풀이하고 다닌 한 도인(道人)이 있었는데 그가 ‘감람나무가 옥 속에서 죽게 된다’고 말했습니다. 고서박사(古書博士)의 별칭이 붙어 있던 그의 말은 순식간에 퍼졌고 수제자들 사이에서는 ‘어차피 옥에서 돌아가실 텐데 비싼 변호사를 사서 소송을 계속할 필요가 있겠는가’ 하고 망설이는 사람이 생겼습니다. 설령 옥사를 하게 되더라도 끝까지 노력해 보아야 하는데, 그리 한다면 억울함의 전부는 아니더라도 일부라도 풀 수 있을 텐데, 그리되어야 신의 역사가 조금이라도 더 쉬워질 것인데, 수제자들은 서로 다투고 시간을 낭비했답니다.
필자는 감람나무의 죽음을 예언한 그분과 개인적으로 친분이 있었습니다. 정말로 도인다운 풍모를 지닌 부드럽고 겸손한 사람이었는데 어쩌다가 그리되었는지 한동안 마음이 무거웠습니다.
천기란 이렇게 무서운 것입니다. 주역의 역사와 성경, 불경의 역사 수 천 년 만에 구세주가 출현해서 구원의 역사를 시작하고 있다는데 비록 관련이 없고 이해가 안 간다 하더라도 걸림돌이 되는 일을 해서는 안 될 것입니다. 그러므로 우리는 말 한마디라도 조심하고 좋은 일에 마(魔가) 끼지 않도록 늘 몸과 마음을 가다듬고 살아가야 합니다. 몰라서 한 짓이라고 변명해도 용서가 되지 않는 것은, 무지한 것도 탐진치 삼독(貪瞋痴 三毒) 가운데 하나기 때문입니다.

先後到着秘文法이 隱頭藏尾混難하야 (선후도착비문법이 은두장미혼난하야)

필자에게 한 아무개라는 지인이 있었습니다. 그는 모태로부터 독실한 불자였는데 자신이 속한 종단에서는 알 수 없었던 미륵에 관한 소식을 길을 가던 도중 우연히 듣고 3천배와 100일 기도 정진을 여러 번 하면서 미륵을 찾아다녔다고 했습니다. 아무리 찾아다녀도 만날 수 없어 하루는 눈물을 흘리며 신세 한탄을 했다고 합니다. 그러다가 ‘나는 당신을 더는 찾아다닐 수가 없습니다. 나이도 먹고 힘이 들어서요. 그러니 당신이 나를 찾아주세요’ 라고 중얼거렸답니다. 이튿날 그녀는 아주 오래전 길에서 우연히 만났던 길동무를 다시 만났답니다. 그가 말하기를 ‘미륵이 당신을 데려오라고 하셔서 당신을 찾으려고 여러 날을 헤매고 다녔습니다.’ 라고 했답니다. 지금 그녀는 미륵의 따사한 품에 안겼을 것 같습니다.
